Résumé : |
This re-photography project really began about one hundred years ago, since at its heart of this study lies a series of photographs taken by Jean Massart, a botanist and professor at Brussels university. Briefly after the turn of the previous century, Massart photographed hundreds of Flemish landscapes and made a selection strictly on scientific grounds of images that gave a specific rendering of natural vegetation or cultivation related to the geography of the site.
In 1980, photographer Georges Charlier and botanist Leo Vanhecke took new photographs of some 60 of these locations in Flanders, commissioned by the National Botanic Garden of Belgium and the Belgian Nature and Bird Sanctuaries. Together with Massart's photos, they were shown at a travelling public exhibition and published in the book Landschappen in Vlaanderen vroeger en nu. Van groene armoede naar grijze overvloed (Landscapes in Flanders then and now: from Green Poverty to Grey Abundance). The result was unique material for a comparison of the landscapes around 1900 with the 1980 landscapes. In 2003, the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi), in cooperation with Labo S, the urbanism laboratory of Ghent University, commissioned the photographer Jan Kempenaers to make a third series of photographs of the same locations, after Massart and Charlier. In 2014 photographer Michiel De Cleene made a fourth image, this time commissioned by the Province of West Flanders and Labo S. This lead to a unique fourfold series of photographs that reveal the transformation of the landscape and the urbanization in Flanders over the past century. Based on these photo series, Labo S is currently carrying out in-depth research on the development of the landscape in Flanders. This research project is intended to lead to a well-founded interpretation and understanding of the scenic transformations of the landscape caused by such factors as residential expansion, changes in agriculture and nature (increase in scale, changing vegetation, increasing recreational demands, ...), infrastructure networks (roads, dykes, electricity networks, ...). The researchers use various media to establish an image of the landscape. And as part of the "Focus on Architecture" and the Focus on the City, the intensive co-operation between Ghent University Library and the Architecture and Urban Planning Department resulted in the present website. Labo S presents the four series of unique photos to confront the general public with the transformations of the landscape and the urbanization of Flanders during the past century. |
