Neumann (architectural history, Brown Univ.; Film Architecture) reveals a new aspect of architectural research-the history of exterior building illumination-in this exploration of the evolution of lighting design over the past 120 years. Engaging essays by the author and other scholars explore outline lighting, diffused lighting, and projected lighting, primarily in Europe and the United States. They cover early lighting technology, the aesthetic experience of 19th-century lighting, and developments in Europe vs. the United States, as well as the use of illumination for festivals and on national landmarks and utility company headquarters.
